Who is the Olde Crone?

My name is Amy Kalinchuk. I don't look like this, however. I guess I'm not what you would call "olde." Sounds good, though, when paired with "Crone."

In addition to making and selling soap, I am a public school teacher in Denver. I have also previously worked as an instructor at the University of Colorado at Denver and Health Science Center. I help my husband with his eBay business in my "free" time. In addition to that, I have written two books ( ebooks offered right here, on this site!), and I'm working on yet another.

If you want something done, you should ask a busy person to do it. Just don't ask me.

Do you have a shop or some place that I can see, feel, and smell the soaps you make?

I don't have a shop, but rather a booth at the Old South Pearl Street Farmer's Market located in the 1500 block of South Pearl Street in Denver. The Farmer's Market is open on Sundays from 9am to 1pm through the market season. The next season for that particular market is running from June 7-October 25, 2009. This year, I can also be found at the new Highlands Farmer's Market, at 1500 Boulder street in Denver, on Saturdays! June 6-October...something. The Saturday market also runs from 9am-1pm.

During the lag time between farmer's market seasons, you can purchase my soaps right here. Heck, you can purchase the soaps right here, right now! No need to wait for the market to end, or worry that you live far away. We can take care of your soap purchase and send it to you. Isn't that why Al created the internet, anyway?

Why should I use handmade soap? My commercially made soap cleans my skin just fine.
Handmade soap will also clean your skin; don't worry about that. However, you might want to check the ingredient list on your commercially made “soap.” Most of these “soaps” are actually detergents, and not soap. Handmade soap contains all of the naturally occurring glycerin, which helps to draw moisture to your skin. The big manufacturers remove the glycerin, and then sell it back to you in their lotion! You don’t want to bathe in detergent, do you?
Okay, what ingredients ARE in your soap, there, missy?
The ingredients in Olde Crone’s Bewitching Bath Soap are all natural. Examples include: saponified oils of castor bean, coconut, olive, palm fruit, palm kernel, evening primrose, avocado, jojoba, and wheat germ; shea butter, mango butter and aloe butter; essential oils for fragrance; oatmeal, honey, Dead Sea mud, flower petals; goat milk; natural clays; these are the extent of the ingredients in Olde Crone’s. Some soaps may contain any or all of the oils or ingredients listed above, in different combinations; read the soap description to see exactly which ingredients are in any particular soap. In any case, you can rest assured that these soaps are all natural.
What the heck does “saponified” mean?
“Saponified,” means “turned into soap.”  This is done by combining the selected fats with lye.
Hey! I know that word! Lye is drain cleaner, lady! Are you nuts? I don’t want to wash with drain cleaner!
Neither do I! Lye is a chemical compound, otherwise known as Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH). It combines with the fat on a molecular level, to change the actual composition of the fat AND the lye. Just like you wouldn’t want to touch straight Sodium (Na), or straight Chlorine (Cl), you WILL sprinkle Sodium Chloride (NaCl) on your food, won’t you? That’s simple table salt. Soap is similar in that respect: it is NOT fat alone, and it is NOT lye. It has been turned into soap. The fats and lye have been transformed. True soap cannot be made without lye.
Whew! Thanks for that explanation. So, what are some more benefits of using handmade soap?
Handmade soap is very moisturizing. When I use it, the water beads up on my skin in the shower. Furthermore, no artificial fragrances are used in Olde Crone’s, which means people with sensitive skin can relax, knowing that natural ingredients are used, and shouldn’t irritate the skin. Please make sure you read the ingredient list of the soap you are purchasing, if you wish to only use vegan products. Some of my soaps contain honey and/or goat milk. However, no animal fats are used; ovo-lacto vegetarians should feel comfortable with all the soaps. Knowing the ingredients of your soap is another benefit of purchasing them here; you know exactly what you are putting on your skin.
Why are your soaps all beige and brown? The only "colored" soaps seems to be the spa soap and a couple of face soaps.
The Olde Crone does not believe in putting chemicals into the soaps! The soaps are meant to be used, so toward that end, The Olde Crone only uses additives for color when it makes sense for the soap. The colors come from natural additives only: honey, mud, clay, oats, goat milk and essential oils are some of the things that cause variations in color.
I can't wait to order my soap! What are the shipping charges?
The Olde Crone uses USPS Priority Mail envelopes and boxes. For up to 6 soaps, the shipping charge is $4.95. For 7 soaps or more, or for scrub purchases, the shipping charge is $10.35. Unless the soap is curing and is currently unavailable, your soap will be shipped out within 2 days, so you should receive it within 4-5 days. Usually, the soap will ship out the day after you order it.
Great! Do you take credit cards?

The Olde Crone uses Paypal for payments. You will be able to use your credit card by paying through Paypal's secure system.
